Marine Insurance for Hong Kong Yacht Owners: The 2026 Guide

Marine Insurance

Annual premiums typically run 1.0–1.5% of the vessel’s insured value. Here is what HK marine insurance actually costs.

3M – 5M Value
$35k–60k
Entry-level risk profile.
5M – 10M Value
$60k–120k
Highly dependent on age.
10M – 20M Value
$120k–250k
Complex coverage needed.
20M+ Value
$250k+
Bespoke superyacht underwriting.
Hull & Machinery
3rd Party Liability
Typhoon / Disaster
Crew Liability

Insurance is one of the largest lines in your annual operating cost. Run your full ownership numbers to see how the premium fits alongside berthing, maintenance, fuel, and crew.

Costly Mistakes to Avoid
  1. Underinsuring. Insuring an HKD 8M yacht for HKD 5M to save HKD 20k/year guarantees an HKD 3M gap in a total loss. Insure at replacement value, not a reduced figure.
  2. The crew clause. Many policies are instantly voided if the vessel is operated by an unlicensed person. Always check the operator clause and confirm any skipper holds a valid Hong Kong certificate of competency.
  3. Navigation and geographic limits. Most Hong Kong marine policies cover “HK waters only” or “HK + GBA + Macau.” Sailing outside the policy’s geographic limits can void cover entirely. Confirm your limits before any GBA yard trip or winter relocation south.
  4. Agreed value vs market value. Some policies pay an “agreed value” set at policy inception; others pay depreciated “market value” at claim time. On a 5-year-old yacht the gap can exceed 30% of your insured amount. Confirm which type your policy is, and review the agreed value annually.

What drives your premium

Two identical yachts can carry very different premiums. Underwriters price on risk, and these are the factors that move your rate the most.

Pushes Premium Up
Vessel age — older hulls and engines cost more to insure.
High insured value — more exposure for the underwriter.
Inexperienced operator — or no licensed captain.
Typhoon exposure — berth location and storm plan matter.
Charter use — commercial activity raises risk.Commercial charter use isn’t just a higher premium — it usually triggers a different policy category (commercial marine vs private pleasure), often 50–100% more expensive. See our Charter Management page for the full insurance implications of chartering.
Pulls Premium Down
Clean claims history — no losses, lower rate.
Recent survey — a current condition report reassures underwriters. See our Marine Surveyor page for typical survey costs and what underwriters expect.
Licensed, experienced skipper — demonstrably lower risk.
Secure berth — a proper marina with a typhoon plan.
Higher voluntary excess — you carry more, they charge less.

What a proper policy must cover

A cheap policy with gaps is worse than no policy, because it gives false confidence. At minimum, a Hong Kong yacht policy should include:

Hull & Machinery
Physical damage to the vessel, engines, and equipment — the core of the policy.
Third-Party Liability
Damage you cause to other vessels, property, or people. Often the largest real exposure.
Typhoon & Disaster
Critical in Hong Kong. Confirm storm cover is not excluded or sub-limited.
Crew Liability
Cover for paid or volunteer crew injury. Check the operator clause carefully.

Why owners come to us for the introduction

Insurance is where owners most often overpay or underinsure. An independent introduction means you compare real cover, not one broker’s pitch.

We’re buyer-side, not selling policies
We do not underwrite or sell insurance and take nothing off your premium. Our only interest is that you are properly covered, not over-sold.
Compare real options
We introduce you to brokers worth your time so you can compare cover and price — instead of trusting a single quote you cannot benchmark.
We flag the gaps that bite
Underinsurance and the crew clause are the two errors that wreck claims. We make sure the policy you compare actually covers what you own.

Frequently asked questions

How much does yacht insurance cost in Hong Kong?
Annual premiums typically run 1.0 to 1.5 percent of the vessel insured value. A HKD 3M to 5M yacht runs roughly HKD 35k to 60k per year, a HKD 5M to 10M yacht HKD 60k to 120k, and larger vessels considerably more depending on age and use.
What happens if I underinsure my yacht?
You carry the gap yourself. Insuring an HKD 8M yacht for HKD 5M to save on premium guarantees an HKD 3M shortfall in a total loss. Always insure at replacement value, not a reduced figure.
Can my insurance claim be denied?
Yes. The most common cause is the operator clause: many policies are void if the vessel is operated by an unlicensed person. Operating without a valid Hong Kong certificate of competency can void cover entirely, so always read the fine print.
Does my policy cover typhoon damage?
It should, but confirm it. In Hong Kong, typhoon and storm cover is essential. Check it is not excluded or sub-limited, and that your berth meets any storm-plan requirements the underwriter sets.
