Marine Surveyor in Hong Kong: The 2026 Buyer’s Guide

Marine Surveyor

Before you sign an offer, before you transfer a deposit, before you commit to anything else on this page — get a marine survey. A surveyor is the only independent professional who physically inspects the vessel. Skipping this step is the single most expensive mistake a first-time HK buyer can make.

Pre-Purchase Survey
HKD 12k–25k
Full hull, systems, and sea-trial inspection. The most important spend in the entire process.
Insurance Survey

Condition assessment required by most underwriters before issuing a policy.
Damage / Valuation Survey
HKD 8k–18k
Post-incident assessment or formal valuation for sale, refinancing, or dispute.

Buyer-Side Warning
Costly Mistakes to Avoid
1 Skipping the survey to save HKD 15k.
A surveyor regularly finds HKD 100k–500k of hidden hull, engine, or osmotic issues. The math is not subtle.
2 Using the broker’s recommended surveyor.
Conflict of interest. The surveyor works for whoever pays them — make sure that is you, not the broker on the other side of the deal.
Why owners come to us for the introduction
We’re buyer-side only

We hold no inventory and represent no seller. We earn nothing from your survey fee, so the surveyor we introduce answers to you alone — you engage and pay them directly.

One conversation, not ten

Tell us your vessel and situation once. We handle the matching and the introduction, so you skip cold-calling surveyors and repeating yourself to each one.

Local, fast, on your side

We are in Hong Kong and know the local market. We move quickly when you have a deal on the table — and our only interest is your decision, not closing a sale.

Marine Surveyor FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How much does a marine survey cost in Hong Kong?
A pre-purchase survey typically costs HKD 12,000 to 25,000, depending on the vessel size, age, and complexity. An insurance survey runs HKD 6,000 to 12,000, and a damage or valuation survey HKD 8,000 to 18,000.
Do I really need a survey if the yacht looks to be in good condition?
Yes. The most expensive problems such as osmotic blistering, structural damage, engine wear, and corroded through-hulls are invisible to the untrained eye and are routinely hidden under fresh gelcoat and detailing.
Should I use the surveyor my broker recommends?
No. This is a conflict of interest. A surveyor works for whoever engages and pays them, so you should engage and pay the surveyor yourself rather than relying on one recommended by the broker who profits from the sale.
What is included in a pre-purchase survey?
A proper pre-purchase survey covers the hull and structure, engine and mechanical systems, electrical systems, a sea trial under power, and safety equipment, with a detailed written report. A haul-out and a sea trial are both essential.
How long does a marine survey take?
For a typical 40 to 55ft vessel, expect a full day covering a haul-out and hull inspection, a systems examination, and a sea trial. The written report usually follows within a few days to a week.
